Sylvester Hemmings is a graduate of the University of West Indies where he completed a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in the area of Economics and Management in 1985 and later went on to complete a Master’s of Business Administration from the Nova University in 1990. It was from there he began his career in business and finance.
Following these and other achievements, he went on to hold the position as a Senior Economist at the Planning Institute of Jamaica and also the position of Project Manager for the Jamaica Pre-Investment Program where he brought much investment to the country.
After making major moves in the world of finance he went on to conquer new grounds in the field of law. In 1997 he completed his Bachelor of Law (LL.B) at the University of Wolverhampton and then received his Certificate of Legal Education (CLE) from Norman Manley Law School in 2000.
After law school he became an Associate at Archer Cummings & Associates in 2001 before starting his own private practice, Sylvester Hemmings & Associates in 2003. His practice has no bounds as he has dealt with a vast variety of matters but most of his work may be categorised in civil and criminal litigation.
In addition to these great accomplishments, as a born leader and a person who is community oriented, Mr Hemmings serves as a Justice of the Peace and the President of the Belgrade Heights Citizens' Association.
Mr. Sylvester Hemmings is a strong believer in the "love your neighbour as thyself" principle and as such believes that as citizens we must operate as fairly as we possibly can by treating each other with the same respect that we would want to be treated with. This is a testament to the work he has worked so hard to accomplish to ensure that each client is given a fair shot at justice and afforded their due rights.
Holding the position as Partner at Sylvester Hemmings and Associates, Richard Hemmings brings diverse experience to the firm. As a proud Wolmerian it is no surprise that his career is a direct reflection of him doing everything to his greatest potential.
His tertiary education began at The University of the West Indies (Mona) where he completed a Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc.) with a Major in Environmental Physics and Minors in Electronics and Mathematics in 2004. Once he completed his first degree, he taught at his alma mater Wolmer’s Trust High School for Boys. There, he shared his love for Mathematics and Physics with the students he interacted with for a year.
Thereafter, he decided to pursue his second passion and explore the field of law. In 2008, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B) also at the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill), where he specially focused on the areas of Caribbean Environmental Law, Corporate Management and Intellectual Property Law.
Once accomplishing that, he received his Certificate of Legal Education (CLE) from Norman Manley Law School and was called to the bar in 2010. Here he remained an active member of the Norman Manley Students’ Association and the Men-At-Work club where he served in the leadership capacity as secretary for both organizations. Being a man of many hats, he also taught A-level law at the University of Technology during his studies, again contributing to the educational system.
In 2011 he began his tenure as a legal officer at Ministry of Transport, Works & Housing where he served for 5 years, concentrating on Conveyancing and Public Partnership Agreements. During this tenure he also went on to hold the title as Jamaica’s representative to the Legal Sub-commission of the Caribbean Sea Commission in 2014.
After his 5 years at the Ministry of Transport, Works & Housing, Richard Hemmings became Partner at Sylvester Hemmings and Associates in 2016. He primarily focuses on Environmental Law, Commercial Law, Family Law and Conveyancing in Jamaica and regionally through associates in the Caribbean. A believer in lifelong learning, in 2020 he completed his LLM in Environmental and Natural Resources Law/ International Dispute Resolution.
Mr. Richard Hemmings' life mantra is “You’ve got to be different to make a difference!” This is indeed something he makes an effort to live by every day and is a firm believer that one must stand out to outstanding things.
